Your provider typically provides medication refills to your chosen pharmacy at your appointment with enough refills to cover until your next appointment.
We understand things can happen. If your bottle or the pharmacy app shows no refill, the first thing to do is CALL YOUR PHARMACY. Often, they have filed your refill under a different prescription number or they returned your refill to the shelf.
If this does not resolve the issue, please let us know through Spruce (encrypted) or the office phone (321)-638-3818.
This could be one of a few things. Often, the pharmacy says they need "authorization" from your doctor's office when they're waiting on a prior authorization to be approved by your insurance company. Sometimes they use this language when they need a new prescription sent in.
Please CALL YOUR PHARMACY to verify what they need (insurance issues, new refill sent, instructions clarified, etc).
** If it is an insurance issue (i.e. needing a prior authorization), please send a message to our office using SpruceHealth so we can follow up with your insurance.
** If they need a new prescription, please let us know through Spruce (encrypted) or the office phone (321)-638-3818.
*** Reminder - 2 business days are required to process refill requests, and prescriptions are sent ONLY on days your provider is in the office. To avoid interruption in your medication, please manage your prescriptions and refills proactively by contacting the pharmacy in advance to allow you time to contact our office. ****
If appropriate, your provider may provide refills at your appointment on your controlled substance medications. Pharmacies have special rules for keeping these prescriptions. and the refill may not be visible on your pharmacy app.
It is your responsibility to manage your prescriptions. The pharmacy often will not automatically fill these refills, and you have to call in advance to request they be filled.
The first step is to call the pharmacy and ask them to check their controlled substance folder. Let them know your provider sent two prescriptions (i.e. she sent March and April).
It is strongly advised you speak to your pharmacy about when you need to call them each month and then put a reminder in your calendar.
CONTROLLED Medications are ONLY sent AT appointments and are not changed in between appointments. If there is an issue where the pharmacy does not have the prescription - your provider/our office team can help clarify with the pharmacy during normal business hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Controlled Medications are not sent on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or Mondays (unless you have an appointment that day with your provider).
In the state of Florida, patients may independently request pharmacies transfer their medications. This now applies to ALL medications, EXCEPT FOR SCHEDULE II ADHD STIMULANTS.
The first step is to call the new desired pharmacy and provide them the name and phone number of the original pharmacy and the requested medication.
There are rules, laws, and guidelines in regards to pharmacies following through on these requests in a timely manner.
If it is a controlled medication, it may be transferred ONLY ONE TIME by being transferred directly from one licensed pharmacist to another licensed pharmacist. It cannot be transferred again to a different pharmacy. Any remaining refills will transfer with the transfer of the prescription to the new pharmacy.**
**NEW FEDERAL DEA RULE and Florida UPDATED RULE allows for pharmacies to make a direct transfer from one pharmacist to a second pharmacist ONE TIME of an existing prescription for a Schedule III, IV, and V medication - this includes medications such as modafinil, benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, etc), & hypnotics (Ambien, etc). THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE SCHEDULE II ADHD MEDICATIONS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA.
